Sea surface temperature estimated from satellite images
The sea surface temperature from the satellite images is monitored daily from the Baltic Sea. Finnish Environment Institute receives 3-4 satellite images daily, but clouds often prevent the monitoring at least in some parts of the Baltic Sea. Results are presented as sea surface temperature maps, where temperatures are descriped as colors ranging from blue (colder) to red (warmer). Cloudy areas are shown white and land areas grey. The resolution for the satellite images used is 1-2 km depending on the measurement angle, so the surface temperature can be measured from the largest lakes of Finland as well.

Disclaimer
Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) / Geoinformatics and Land Use Division has produced these Remote Sensing products. The products are based on NOAA AVHRR (NOAA), TERRA MODIS (NASA) or ENVISAT MERIS (ESA) satellite observations. NOAA AVHRR and TERRA/AQUA MODIS images are received by Finnish Meteorological Institute. ENVISAT MERIS images are received from ESA/Kiruna Envisat web file server. SYKE should be mentioned as a source if data is used in publications or in presentations or made available to the public in some other way. In case of scientific publications which explicitly make use of the products the appropriate references are to be inquired from the remote sensing group (syke_rs_oper): group@ymparisto.fi [syke_rs_oper].
