48 Semi volatile organic compounds (SVOC) and flame retardants- A report on their occurrence in the residential and office environments, risk assessment for indoor exposure and incorporation to the material classification.
Background
The occurrence of semi volatile organic compounds (SVOC) and flame retardants in the indoor environment is today under special interest. These compounds have been commonly used in building materials.
They might be released to the surroundings from new products as well as a result of wearing. The indoor air concentration of SVOCs and flame retardants is usually low because of their adsorption to surfaces and dust particles. The probable exposure routes in the indoor environment are skin contact with surfaces, aerosol deposition on skin and respiratory intake.
It is important that the knowledge of the use of these chemicals in the production processes and their behavior is incorporated to the general information management within the material and building industry. Objectives
The project investigates the occurrence of SVOC compounds and flame retardants in the commonly used building and furnishing materials. The knowledge is described in relation to the building product information as a whole, taking into consideration the clarification work on dangerous substances being done in the EU. Sampling procedures and analysis techniques are clarified for the possible incorporation of these compounds to the material classification. Duration
