The Finnish Environment 246, Environmental Protection, p. 63. Only available in print (952-11-0343-4).
Abstract
The Ministry of the Environment in Finland and VKI (Water Quality Institute, Denmark) signed an agreement on the assessment of the Finnish Environment Institute's (FEI) laboratory concerning its reference laboratory activities in October 1997.
The aim of the assessment was to evaluate whether the FEI laboratory is competent and suitable to carry out national environmental reference laboratory functions within its defined scope. One objective was also to identify essential needs for development with respect to these functions in the laboratory.
It is concluded that the FEI laboratory is both competent and suitable to act as the national environmental reference laboratory in Finland. The appointment calls for some expansion of the activities alrady established and the establishment of a framework for the reference laboratory functions. Organizing and managing the reference laboratory activities are also discussed.
