Co-operation with South Africa
The Central Finland Regional Environment Centre was engaged in a plan of development co-operation in the North West Province of South Africa in 2002 - 2007. The overall objective of the project was to support sustainable development in the Province. The purpose was to specifically address environmental issues in development planning and implementation, and to strengthen the capacity of the responsible authorities.
The project's emphasis was on implementation of existing national and provincial legislation, strategies and policies. It is also aimed at consolidating the fragmented legislation and processes in order to make development faster and easier. The national and provincial legislation, provincial development strategies, municipal integrated development plans and international best practices were basic points of departure for the project. The first period of the project ran from 2002 to 2004 and the second started at the beginning of 2006.
