Pioneer area in waste management

Every Finn produces approximately 150 kilos of municipal waste annually of which approximately one third is recycled.

Nearly all municipalities take part in the western Finland regional waste management cooperation. The centralization of waste management has improved the standars of waste treatment. There are six waste management companies in the area. Waste is first of all recovered as material or energy.

There are five operative landfills for non-hazardous waste and three landfills for hazardous waste in the region.

In the Vaasa region the gasstorage tank of the Stormossen waste treatment plant is converting organic municipal waste into biogas.
