The Greenhouse Gas Inventory system in Finland

Statistics Finland is the authority responsible for national greenhouse gas inventory system in Finland. Statistics Finland is also responsible for the quality management and development of emission monitoring and reporting. Statistics Finland coordinates the work of expert institutions taking part in the monitoring, including the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, the Natural Resources Institute Finland LUKE and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and it also cooperates with the relevant ministries.

Statistics Finland is an expert institution that provides the information on emission from the energy sector and industrial processes. Part of the information on energy sector emissions are provided by VTT (transportation and machinery). The Finnish Environment Institute SYKE provides the inventory with emissions data from the waste management sector and F-gases. The inventory data for the agriculture, land use, land use change and forestry sectors are calculated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

Finland and other member states submit their inventory reports to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change annually by the middle of April. A shared EU report is also compiled. The Statistics Finland compiles the inventory report of Finland.

Compiling the greenhouse gas inventory takes about a year and it is compiled on an annual basis. The inventory data are calculated on the basis of verified and reported data from two years back. The up-to-data and latest information on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sinks can be found on the website of Statistics Finland.
